WASHINGTON
WINE
READING BETWEEN THE WINES:
Washington’s
top wine regions are relatively new in the scheme of things,
only emerging onto the scene in the early 1980s. Still,
even in that short period of time, Washington holds its
own as the runner up state, just behind California, for
premium wine production in the United States. Many vineyards
statewide are producing fabulous Merlots, Cabernets, Syrahs,
Chardonnays, and more.
THE REGION
The Washington wine region spreads through the valleys and
hillsides of the Cascade Mountains in northwest corner of
the United States. The major regions are Yakima Valley,
Walla Walla Valley, Columbia Valley, and Red Mountain.
THE
GRAPES
WASHINGTON
REDS:
Cabernet
Sauvignon
This big and bold red grape made its way to Washington from
France and consistently outdoes its family back in Bordeaux.
Straight up, this black-currant-oozing grape offers some
of Washington’s best single varietal Cabs and makes
lovely blends with Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
Merlot
And heeeeeeere’s Merlot. Merlot is the superstar grape
of Washington varietals. Although a bit more acidic than
its relatives in California, the Washington Merlot produces
an easy-to-drink, black cherry fervor that’s stealing
the show from the Cabernet headliner.
Syrah
Washington
terroir urges this grape along nicely with its gravel-type
soil and lengthy, warm growing season. This grape’s
peppery, spicy, berry flavors are bound to make this wine
America’s next top red.
WASHINGTON WHITES:
Sauvignon
Blanc
This grape’s twofold nature offers varying styles
from creamy and oaky with zing to zippy with a touch of
grassiness. Both tend to be refreshing, fruity, and ripe
with character.
Chardonnay
The most well-planted grape worldwide is no different in
Washington. Chardonnay stakes its ground in more vineyard
per capita than any other grape in the state. With its light
crisp apple appeal, its wines are among Washington’s
most distinguishable.
Gewürztraminer
The spicy, tropical fruit audacity of the Gewürztraminer
grape and its natural ability to withstand cooler climates
make good in Washington. Most area vintners crank up the
sweeter side although going forward many aim to make more
of the dryer Alsatian version.
