TUSCANY
READING
BETWEEN THE WINES:
If
you’ve ever dined at an Italian restaurant and couldn’t
get enough of the smooth red juice in a straw-wrapped flask,
odds are you’ve indulged in the Tuscan pleasure of
Chianti.
Tuscany
makes some of the leading hip reds and even gets chic by
blending Tuscan-native grapes with untraditional foreigners
like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to make the area’s
“Super Tuscans.”
Although
Tuscany is really a giant vineyard of big and fruity reds,
its stylish sweet and dry whites are also quite notable.
THE
REGION
Tuscany lies on the central-western Italian coast of the
Mediterranean and includes Florence and other fine winemaking
cities.
The
major appellations in the region are Brunello, Chianti,
Vernaccia de San Giminagno, and Vino Nobile di Monepulciano.
THE
GRAPES
TUSCAN
REDS:
Sangiovese
This little spice girl brings Tuscany its smooth, medium-
to full-bodied reds. The Sangiovese is best as a blender
grape and brings firm, robust flavors and milder red berry
aromas to most of the Tuscan reds.
TUSCAN
WHITES:
Vernaccia
The grape that opened the doors to the Italian D.O.C., Vernaccia
grapes provide Tuscany its array of sweet and dry whites.
Vernaccia grapes meld into varying wines with refreshing,
citrusy notes.
