Kenya Coffee (My Favorite!)

Why Kenya Coffee?

I'm devoting a page on Kenya coffee simply because so many people keep asking me what my favorite coffee is. I really enjoy many coffees, but if I had to choose a favorite, I'd choose Kenya coffee.

It really is a great tasting brew and many would claim it to be some of, if not the best in the world. Kenya coffee gets its wonderful flavor from the rich volcanic soil and high altitudes of the mountains there in Eastern Africa.

Another reason why Kenya produces such fine coffee is because their government recognizes the quality of coffee their region is capable of making.

The Coffee Board of Kenya strives to make sure that the quality of their beans doesn't suffer by placing strict guidelines and rewards for growing the best possible beans.

How Does it Taste?

Kenya coffees have a distinct, bright acidity. They are medium bodied and almost sweet. You can sometimes detect sublime notes of blackcurrant flavors and aromas. The best grades are fabulously aromatic with very little bitterness.

While it may not be everyone's favorite, it seems to win the most complements from those I have recommended it to.

How is Kenya Coffee Graded?

You may have seen Kenya AA coffee plastered everywhere on the internet, but what does it mean? Kenya AA is simply a measurement of the size, shape and density of the bean. Here is a list of the grades of SIZES of Kenya coffee in order from largest to smallest.

AA, AB, PB, C, E, TT, and T

Now, size is important when it comes to quality in the respect that usually a larger size will contain more of the precious oils which give coffee its flavor and aroma.

Besides the size grade, The Coffee Board of Kenya also uses a class system to rate the quality of the beans. The classes are on a scale of 1 - 10 with class 1 being the best. This class system is rarely advertised, but I found it interesting to note that just because a coffee is rated Kenya AA, it could be as low as a class 4.

Below, I have found a great website that sells some high quality beans.

Kenya "AA" Beans 1 Lb Bag

Kenya`s reputation as a top quality coffee producer is unsurpassed. This meticously prepared East African coffee is famous for it’s rich full body, strong pleasant acidity, floral fragrant aroma and a winey aftertaste with overtones of berries and citrus

I hope you enjoy this Kenya coffee as much as I do!
