BURGUNDY
READING
BETWEEN THE WINES:
Burgundy,
otherwise known as Bourgogne, is a region rich in versatile
flavors with a long history of making some of the most well-known
wines. The Burgundy region is famous for its dry and austere
Chablis and all-around delicious Beaujolais. My favorite
though, is the silky smooth Pinot Noir.
THE
REGION
The Burgundy wine region is in eastern France, south of
Paris. The region is divided up into five districts: Beaujolais,
Chablis, Côte Chalonnaise, Côte d'Or, and Mâconnais.
Some
of the major appellations in the region are Beaujolais,
Chablis, Gevrey-Chambertin, Pouilly Fuissé, Volnay,
and Côte d'Or, which is divided into Côte de
Nuits and Côte de Beaune (with the well-known villages
of Aloxe Corton, Pommard, and Chassagne Montrachet).
THE
GRAPES
Velvety Burgundy reds come from the Pinot Noir while Burgundy
whites may be Chardonnay dry or sensual sweety Gamay.
BURGUNDY
REDS:
Pinot
Noir
This tiny red grape creates the twinkle in champagne and
sparkling wines but also transforms into some sexy, smooth
ruby reds that breathe a summer fruit bouquet.
BURGUNDY
WHITES:
Chardonnay
This world famous grape is grown as far as the eye can see.
Its buttery and tropical fruit flavors, famous also in Champagne
making, meld into some delicate and dry whites.
Gamay
All by itself, the gamay grape gives Burgundy’s Beaujolais
its pear and banana aromas and smooth and easy-to-drink,
fruity flavor. These wines are best enjoyed in their freshest
youth.
