So
what is a kegerator and why would you want one? Uhhh, why
wouldn't you want one is more like it!
A
kegerator is a draft beer system that dispenses liquid gold
at the whims of the beer master (that's you) in the comfort
of your own home!
No,
this is not fantasy land, you too can be the envy of all
your football lovin', nacho eatin', "Oh, I brought
a bag of chips but I forgot to get beer, so can I have some
of your's" friends. And for those of you with wives,
think of all the money you can save by purchasing by the
keg.
What
Are They?
The
term kegerator is just like it seems, a refrigerator for
a keg of beer. But it's really much more than that. A more
accurate term is a draft beer system. The reason is that
it not only keeps a keg cold, but it is also a dispensing
and carbonation system.

Types
of Kegerators
Here
are the various types of draft beer systems available for
the home.
Ready
to Go Systems - These are fully functional
systems designed to dispense draft beer just like at a bar.
Types of these include:
Under
Counter Units
- made with the ventillation from the front so they can
be built into the cabinet or counter. These are the perfect
solution if you want to install a draft system into your
cabinetry.
Stand
Alone Units - made to place anywhere in the room
and are generally less expensive than under counter units.
Outdoor
Units - typically made of stainless steel and
the electrical components are protected from moisture.
This is a must if you want to place out at the pool or
on the deck.
Refrigerator
Conversion Kits
- These kits (and some work on your part) will allow you
to enjoy foamy draft beer for less dough.
With
it, you can convert a standard refrigerator into a fully
functional draft beer system. Who knows, you might just
be able to build and sell some of these to your "not
so handy" friends and have it pay for itself!
These
Systems Are:
Easy
to Do - If you can drill a hole, and possibly
do some minor reorganization (depending on the particular
refrigerator) you can do this modification.
Customizable
- Do it how you want. If you've got a full sized refrigerator
you're not using, you can even have mulitple taps.
Multipurpose
- Utilize the freezer part of the refrigerator
to store your mugs to keep them frosty!
Things
to Consider
You
can save from 50% - 70% when you switch to serving draft
beer from buying expensive bottles and cans.
A
standard half keg contains about 15 gallons or 6 cases of
beer. Think of all of the time saved making beer runs.
Being
on tap, beer can be consumed in whatever quantity you desire.
Say you only want 6 more ounces, no problem!
Keg
beer is not pasteurized so it will need to stay cool during
storage.
Make
sure you learn how the systems work and do the cleaning
maintenance in order to get the most enjoyment out of them.
